Dandruff or Just Dry Scalp?

Beauty, a lot of the times we as professionals and consumers mistake the two so let's break it down.

So to start there is a difference between dry scalp and dandruff and before we get into that I want to explain to you that our scalp is just skin and skin needs to be shed daily. Normal skin cells on a healthy scalp appear sometimes as small dry flakes and this would be considered our DRY SCALP. Where as with DANDRUFF, the flakes tend to be clumpy, oily, and large. Think back and determine what size and type of flakes you have, are they small and not too noticeable or are they large brownish in color and oily? Dry scalp results from different things such as age, sunburn, and cold dry climates and dandruff is the "excessive production and accumulation of skin cells." Causes of dandruff link back to stress, age, hormones, poor dieting and poor hygiene. With DANDRUFF the best way to treat is typically with OTC anti-dandruff shampoos and in extreme cases prescription shampoo that may contain PYRITHIONE ZINC or KETOCONAZOLE. For dry scalp typically water intake, dark greens, and essential oils such as Jojoba and Avocado applied to the midshaft and ends will help especially in the fall and winter months.
